What Is Through-Wall Flashing?

Through-wall flashing is a technique that is designed to move moisture, that has breached the wall, to the outside. While water has already gotten inside, through-wall flashing removes the water before it can cause damage. Through wall flashing is the best method of preventing leaks except in areas impacted by earthquakes.

Through-wall flashing is made by moulding the metals to provide strength in mortar joints. All through-wall flashing must be set between a bed of mortar both above and below the flashing. You should ensure that you comply with the flashing manufacturer’s directions.

This technique should be used at any area where moisture can infiltrate the wall, and in other select locations that are particularly susceptible to water damage.

The flashing should extend at least 8 inches from the lowest point of the exterior to the highest point inside the wall. Weep holes must be used. Pea gravel should be used behind brick veneer. The ends of the flashing must be designed in such a way that previously caught water cannot drain back into the wall.

Why You Should Through-Wall Flash Your Building

Through-wall flashing is a critical component to the long-term health of your home. Water can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage if not properly addressed. To protect your walls, you need to through-wall flash.

No matter how well you prepare, water will eventually make its way inside your walls. Through-wall flashing will halt the water in its tracks, protecting you for as long as possible.

When water does make it inside, it can cause significant damage to your home. It can destroy walls, ceilings, and even create structural concerns. Through-wall flashing is your first line of defense against water.
